About- CERTIFICATE COURSE IN MARITIME CATERING

Catering and Housekeeping section on the ship has the sole responsibility to create a home away from home for the personnel to ensure optimum performance. On completion of Certificate Course in Maritime Catering, the trainee would be able to fulfill his/her part of this responsibility on board. Trainees must have the opportunity to practice Catering and Housekeeping tasks independently and develop such skills which would provide them job opportunities ashore after a few years of sea service. The training standards should be such as to allow career development opportunities towards Diploma and eventually a Degree program for candidates desiring to progress in the field.

Aim

This course is aimed at training the prospective seafarer in culinary arts which would enable the trainee to serve onboard ships as an assistant to the Ship’s Cook, and Housekeeping and Food & Beverage Service.

Objective

A trainee completing this course will be able to:a) Prepare commonly served Indian, and international dishes independently.b) Apply the concepts of Nutrition, health, and Hygiene together with budgetary and costing aspects of catering operations.c) Undertake food and beverage service operations d) Attend to the cabin cleaning and other associated work of Housekeeping e) Maintain highest standards of safe working practices, protection of the environment, security of the ship and personnel on board.f) Assist in other shipboard duties of mooring the vessel and emergencies on board.g) Perform duties with diligence and care of all persons on board.

Scope

The training program is a Six months Pre-Sea Training Program approved by the Directorate General of Shipping, Ministry of Shipping, Government of India. The training comprises a theoretical and practical study of Food Production, Food & Beverage Service, House-keeping and Maritime Familiarization which allows the successful trainees to join the merchant shipping in the Hospitality Department.

Minimum Entry Requirement

10th Standard Pass from recognized Board with minimum 40% aggregate and 40% marks in the English language. Or Pass in 2-Year I.T.I. course from Govt. Approved Institute with minimum 50% aggregate marks in final year and minimum 40% marks in English at 10th or Diploma Exam.

Age Limit

18- 25 Years and 27 Years for candidates holding Degree or Diploma.(The candidate aspiring to join this course should be within the above age limit on the date of course commencement.)

Medical and Eye-sight Requirements

Medical and Eye-sight requirements shall be as per the existing standards of DG Shipping. 6/6 unaided Vision with no colour blindness. No speech impairment (disorder).Every trainee will have to undergo and produce a Medical Fitness certificate issued by DG Shipping approved Doctor.

Course Strength

The approved course capacity of Academies deferent from each other for Candidates Per Batch and This course is conducted twice a year with batches commencing January and July each year.Note: It is suggested that candidates visit our office in person to register for the course.

Duties of a Saloon Rating on a Ship

Saloon Ratings are trained in Food Production, Food & Beverage Service, Housekeeping services. They can be employed in either the Main Fleet of the Merchant Navy or Cruise Shipping. Saloon Ratings work on the ship involves carrying out all operations in hospitality management.
